Is Therapy Right For Me?

If you’re reading this post, then I know you’ve asked yourself that question many times already. Should I be seeking out therapy?  So how Do you know if therapy would be helpful for you?

No one wants to feel like there is something wrong with them, and for many people that is exactly how it feels when they are considering therapy. But let me ask you, when you make the decision to seek out a life coach do you have the same concern? Or what about scheduling a massage? In my experience when we decide to hire a life coach it’s because we are trying to accomplish some new and exciting goals so we approach it with a sense of hopeful expectation. Or when we decide to get a massage it is usually an act of self-care and it feels luxurious. We do not often think of therapy in those terms but therapy is also an act of self-care and can be the precursor of exploring new and exciting aspects of your life. Yes, sometimes therapy can be uncomfortable, but just like when the massage therapist finds that knot in your back where you hold ALL of your stress, the uncomfortable parts can lead to relief and greater peace of mind.

Although many people feel like they have to wait until their problems are “bad enough” before they call a therapist, which is not necessarily true. If you are thinking about consulting a therapist then it probably Would be helpful to talk to someone. Additionally, people have the idea that if they begin therapy they are committing for the long term. But most therapists would understand if you want to start with a limited number of sessions so you can try out therapy. Some therapists even offer a free 15-30 minute consultation where you can simply get your questions answered.

Another concern many people have is they don’t really know how a therapist can help. How is talking to a therapist any different from talking to friends or family members? First, and most importantly, a therapist is an impartial observer so they are able to give an objective perspective. You would be amazed by how helpful this alone can be. Second, a therapist has specialized training that can help you gain new insights and better understand old patterns that may not be serving you well. Because therapy is a relationship just like other relationships in your life (Family, friends, colleagues, etc.) it is essential that you find the right therapist for you. So if you try one therapist and you don’t feel that it’s helpful then you may want to consider trying someone else.

So if you’re questioning whether or not therapy is worth pursuing, my advice is Just Call! It’s easy to get caught up in our minds trying to sort out will it be helpful or not. Sometimes just taking an action will really give you the clarity you are seeking, and just think how much better you will feel if it Does help. Please feel free to reach out to me for a free 15-minute consultation.

Take Care!
